  • Objectives The course is principally designed for: * Practising translators wishing to specialise in legal translation * Those already in employment as lawyers or legal secretaries wishing to become translators in the legal field * Linguists who are interested in training as a legal translator The programme is intended to: * Tie in the theoretical framework of legal translation with the practical aspects of this discipline * Enable students to gain insights into legal translation at postgraduate level which will prepare them for a career as a legal translator * Suit the individual needs of students at different stages of their careers and draw their attention to the use of professional standards and ethics within the legal translation sector * Encourage students to discuss translation difficulties and legal terminology pitfalls encountered in their own work * Help students to specialise in a field of translation already relevant to their existing career
  • Academic title You can obtain one of the following: * MA in Legal Translation in one of the 8 language combinations offered. 180 credits in total made up of the first 8 modules of the course (120 credits), and sessions on Research Methodology over the two year period at the end of which you submit a dissertation in order to gain a further 60 credits. The dissertation can either be a piece of individual research or an extended annotated translation. * Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Translation. 120 credits in total, made up of four 15 credit modules in Year One and four 15 credit modules in Year Two. * Individual Modules, taken to help widen knowledge in a particular area of legal translation related to the your current work. These modules are not accredited.
  • Course description This comprehensive course is designed to provide practising translators and linguists with the necessary knowledge and skills to become a legal translator. It provides an overview of the legal systems and relevant terminology in England and Wales, as well as those of the country of the student's other language. The course establishes a theoretical framework for legal translation and offers extensive practice in translating key documents in a wide range of legal fields. This new curriculum was develpoed in consultation with the legal translation industry and is closely tailored to its needs.

    Course content

    There are 8 modules, plus the dissertation (for MA students only):

    Year one

        * Principles and Practice of Legal Translation
        * Terminology and Translation of Contracts
        * Translation for Litigation
        * Terminology and Translation of Property Documents

    Year two


        * Company and Commercial: Legal Principles and Translation 1
        * Company and Commercial: Legal Principles and Translation 2
        * EU: Legal Principles and Translation
        * Financial Legal Translation
        * Dissertation (for MA students only)

    Duration

    This is a two year course (part time) with a flexible attendance pattern designed to accommodate the working translator. Attendance is required for three to four full days four times a year (usually Wednesday to Saturday) mid-September, mid-December, Easter and mid-June.

    Each teaching input session consists of lectures on key features of two jurisdictions, terminology, document analysis and practical translation workshops. Each taught session is followed by a distance element involving submission of and feedback on assignments.
