Legal Practice Course (Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice)

  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements -You must have satisfied the requirements of the academic stage of legal education and be enrolled as a student member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). -You will normally hold a recognised law degree or have gained the Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Postgraduate Diploma in Law (or the Graduate Diploma in Law equivalent). -Certain limited categories of non-graduates may also be eligible. Please check the acceptability of your qualifications with the SRA. It will be your responsibility to ensure that you are eligible to attend a Legal Practice Course in accordance with the SRA's Training Regulations.
  • Course description Introduction

    The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is compulsory for intending solicitors and is validated by the Legal Practice Course Board of the Law Society. The LPC is led by quality staff - the majority of them are qualified solicitors with considerable experience in practice, and leads to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

    The course has a dedicated base room with excellent IT facilities and is ideal in meeting your career aspirations in the legal profession, whether with a commercial firm or in general practice.

    Course Structure
    The full-time course commences with a three week core period, where you are introduced to the pervasive topics of Professional Conduct, European Community Law and Human Rights and Solicitors' and Business Accounts.

    You will also study Probate and Administration of Estates and receive preliminary instruction in Revenue Law and the prescribed skills of advocacy, interviewing, writing, drafting and research.

    Compulsory areas:
    Following the core period you will study the three compulsory areas of Business Law, Litigation, and Property Law and Practice over a period of 17 weeks. The part-time course is taught on one afternoon and one evening per week over two years.

    Elective areas:
    You can complete the course by studying three elective areas selected from the following list:

    Family Law

    Insolvency Law

    Employment Law

    Commercial Law

    Commercial Property

    Private Client: Wills and Estate Planning

    Immigration and Asylum Law

    Electives are designed to provide a balance between commercial and private client areas and to cater for all career aspirations.

    Teaching and Assessment
    You will be taught through a mixture of large and small group sessions with an emphasis on practical
    small group work.

    Other Information
    Teaching will take place in the Firth Street Building on the University's Queensgate campus, conveniently situated in the centre of Huddersfield and easily accessible by public transport. Students will have the use of a dedicated base room with state-of-the-art IT facilities, practitioner library and workroom stocked with practitioner works, the Law Department's own audio-visual suite and Moot Court Room with advocacy training facilities.

    We offer support and advice to those seeking a training contract, including sessions with a recruitment consultant and a mentoring programme with local practitioners.
