  • Academic title Legal Practice Course (LPC)
  • Course description COURSE INFORMATION

    This programme satisfies the Law Society's requirement for those wishing to enter into a training contract to qualify as a solicitor. The programme is intended primarily for those students who have completed the academic stage of training by obtaining a qualifying law degree or passing the Graduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination.

    The part-time route allows students to study whilst in employment. This programme is an integral part of the vocational training of intended solicitors. It aims to prepare students for entry into a training contract with a solicitor.

    The programme includes a large amount of substantive law as well as providing training in the skills of drafting, advocacy, research and interviewing. These areas are covered in the three compulsory core modules.
    What you will study

        * Business Law and Practice
        * Litigation (Civil and Criminal)
        * Property Law and Practice

    In addition students will take three elective subjects from the following:

        * Child Care Law
        * Commercial Dispute Resolution
        * Commercial Law
        * Commercial Leases
        * Employment Law
        * Family Law
        * Housing Law
        * Intellectual Property
        * Law and the Elderly Client
        * Mental Health Law
        * Planning and Environmental Law
        * Sales, Acquisition and Corporate Finance
        * Student Law Office

    The curriculum also incorporates the pervasive themes of business and commercial awareness, revenue law, financial services, professional conduct and accounts and risk analysis. There is a close focus on the Human Rights Act and its implications for all areas of legal practice.
    LLM Advanced Legal Practice/ MA Legal Practice and Policy

    Students are given opportunity to gain an LLM in Advanced Legal Practice or an MA in Legal Practice and Policy while completing the BVC or LPC at Northumbria University. The LLM and MA are available at a discounted rate when studied alongside the LPC or BVC and both programmes can be completed in 12-18 months.

    For both the LLM and MA programmes, students are required to submit a project of between 20,000 and 25,000 words. Students can choose their own project title. Since the project requires in depth-research it may be closely related to the student's area of practice. This is subject to the requirement that the topic chosen is suitable for supervision within the Law School and will satisfactorily meet the programme learning outcomes.

    Completion of the LPC, BVC, Law Society Finals or equivalent entitles students to 120 points advanced standing. Any student who enrols upon the LPC or BVC at the same time as the LLM or the MA must satisfactorily complete their LPC or BVC before they can be awarded the LLM or the MA
