Law LLB (Hons) Top-up and Accelerated Programmes

  • Entry requirements You should have successfully completed the Common Professional Examination course/Graduate Diploma in Law as validated by the Joint Academic Stage Board of the Law Society and the Bar Council.
  • Academic title Law LLB (Hons)
  • Course description Introduction

The top-up degree course is available if you have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) more commonly known as the Common Professional Examination (CPE). The Accelerated Programme is open to those who have a non-law honours degree from a UK institution or equivalent.

The top-up allows you to upgrade your CPE/GDL qualification to a full LLB honours degree. If you have a non-law degree the Accelerated programme allows you to obtain a Bachelor of Law degree in two years instead of three.

    Course Structure

You will be awarded 240 general credits from your CPE/GDL qualification. These credits will replace the compulsory modules normally taken by students on the LLB(Hons) full-time degree, ie 120 foundation credits, 60 intermediate credits and 60 honours credits. Students on the full-time programme will study 60 intermediate option modules and 60 honours option modules.

The following options are available subject to demand:

    Intermediate options:

    Company Law

    Employment Law

    Immigration and Asylum Law

    Commercial Law

    Honours options:

    Revenue Law

    Competition and Intellectual Property Law

    Consumer and Trading Law

    Law of Evidence

    Insolvency Law and Practice

    Family Law

    Medical Law and Ethics

    Law of International Trade

    Planning and Environment Law

Students entering the Accelerated programme are awarded 60 intermediate credits and 60 honours credits for their previous non-law honours degree. You are required to complete 120 foundation credits and a further 60 intermediate and 60 honours level credits over two years. The modules are compulsory and correspond with the 'Foundation of Legal Knowledge' required for 'Qualified Law Degree' status by the Law Society and Bar Council.

    Teaching and Assessment

We hope to offer all elective subjects on a flexible learning basis. Assessment will normally be by one piece of coursework and one examination per subject.

    Other Information

Part-time students can complete the programme in a minimum of two years depending upon which modules we offer in any year. We reserve the right to withdraw options at any time and some modules may not be available on either the full-time or part-time programmes. On the part-time programme you may have to spread your studies over a longer period than two years.
