    Why this course?:

In an increasingly competitive environment, where new business practices are regularly introduced, organisations have to be innovative to survive. Such innovation is dependent upon companies developing effective knowledge management internally as well through external interaction. In order to exploit the potential of the 'knowledge base' organisations need to engage and develop specialists with the ability to implement knowledge management practice to aid the development of business.

The course develops the next generation of technical and business leaders who can drive strategic innovation and collaboration by effective management of organisational knowledge within their specialised domains.

    Course details
    :

The course comprises eight assessed modules, a group project and an individual research project. The modules include lectures and tutorials, and are assessed through practical work, written examinations, case studies, essays, presentations and tests. These provide the 'tools' required for the group and individual projects.

    Group project:

The group project experience is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. Teams of students work to solve an industrial problem. The project applies technical knowledge and provides training in teamwork and the opportunity to develop non-technical aspects of the taught programme. Part-time students can prepare a dissertation on an agreed topic in place of the group project.

Industrially orientated, our team projects have support from external organisations. As a result of external engagement Cranfield students enjoy a higher degree of success when it comes to securing employment. Prospective employers value the student experience where team working to find solutions to industrially based problems are concerned.

    Individual project:

The individual thesis project runs from June to September. The thesis provides an opportunity for a substantial piece of individual research. The thesis is usually industry-based and the subject is defined by the agreement with the sponsor. Working under academic supervision, each student is given a problem, the solution of which requires extensive research and fieldwork. The sponsor will meet the project cost and will allocate an advisor who will ensure access to appropriate data and resources for meeting the project objectives. These are aimed at addressing issues of real importance to the sponsor.

Throughout the thesis project each student will perform presentations of on-going findings and recommendations. The  final thesis document should detail the approach taken to successfully complete the project including, findings, experimental/theoretical studies and recommendations.
