Jewellery Intermediate Workshop - Course

    This course offers an opportunity for students with previous experience to develop and expand their knowledge of jewellery-making skills.

    What does the course involve?
    At Level 3, projects are designed to introduce advanced skills as well as consolidate existing ones. Students are encouraged to experiment and develop individuality as designers. Projects will explore stone setting, chain making, modelling for lost wax casting, fly-pressing, sheet deformation techniques, decorative surface finishes and a variety of construction skills for making hinges, clasps and findings. There will be demonstrations by lecturers, formal exercises and a chance to work experimentally.  Students will be expected to research and develop individual design ideas and keep records, written notes, sketchbooks, presentation drawings and technical diagrams.

    What are the facilities and equipment like?

    Our workshop is well equipped with specialist jewellery and metal-working facilities including soldering torches, rolling mills, pillar drill, scroll-saw, grinding wheel, polishing motor, ultrasonic cleaner, enamelling/PMC kiln, fly press, ring stretcher/shrinker, barrel-polisher and a wide range of hand-tools, stakes and forming tools. Lost wax casting, plating and engraving are carried out in liaison with Hatton Garden and produced off-site only.

    How much should I study outside class?

    It is essential for students to make time outside the course hours to buy their own materials. Some independent research will also be necessary. Students will be expected to visit shows and galleries in their own time.

    How is the course assessed?

    All work is project based and is assessed during the course.
