Introduction to Translation Skills

  • Objectives These courses are aimed at prospective applicants for the IoL Diploma in Translation who have limited translation experience and wish to acquire a solid foundation in translation skills. The introduction courses lead to a University Certificate of Special Study and prepare for the University's Diploma in Translation courses. Students will work with a variety of text types, become familiar with cultural and linguistic issues relevant to translation, learn how to recognise recurring translation problems, carry out lexical research, and apply practical translation skills to a standard that is expected of university students in their final year of a first Modern Languages degree. Assessment is by course work and test.
  • Entry requirements All students should have a degree in the language of study (source language English) or hold an equivalent qualification, e.g. the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Cambridge Certificate (Advanced or Proficiency Level). Alternatively, they may study towards such a qualification in parallel with the "Introduction to Translation Skills" course.
  • Course description Course Content

Courses are generally delivered in the Autumn Term (last week of September to mid December). A course runs for twelve weeks and teaching takes place one evening per week (12 two-hour tuition sessions).
