Course descriptionThis course can improve your promotion prospects, improve service sensitivity and efficiency in how you manage and deliver your services and improve interprofessional communication with survivors of intentional and unintentional violence.
Violence such as domestic violence, rape, torture, child abuse and road traffic deaths causes enormous human cost to individuals, families and society. The increasing recognition, both nationally and internationally, of the extent of this intentional and unintentional violence, makes this an essential course for people working with survivors and their communities. This course meets the requirements of current UK government policies encouraging partnerships and interdisciplinary working between professional and voluntary services.
This unique interprofessional course brings together the latest skills that focus on the delivery of expert practice when working with survivors of intentional and unintentional violence and enables you to turn procedures into interprofessional practice.
The course has been developed in collaboration with experts from a range of disciplines as diverse as police, healthcare, social care and voluntary services, both nationally and internationally, to provide invaluable first-hand experience and the latest evidence base for practice. You will acquire and develop further your skill set, enabling you to make a difference to the lives of survivors as well as influence positively your career development. Students have achieved highly in their areas of practice during and after graduating from this course.
The School of Community and Health Sciences, City University London is currently the only provider of this course in the UK.
What is the course content?
Teaching methods on the course innovative and encourage interdisciplinary learning. The process of working in partnership across professions is integral to the delivery of the course.
The course comprises of eight modules with a variety of assessments, the focus of which is the development of expert practice through partnership and reflection. You will be asked to keep a journal in order to reflect your role and experiences and to explore the learning you have gained through module practice.
For the MSc you must gain 180 credit points, each module consists of 15 credit points. To obtain the MSc you will also have to complete the dissertation module, which is worth 60 credit points and compulsory/core modules totalling 30 credit points.
What are the entry requirements?
This course is open to and designed for practitioners in any discipline who work with survivors of violence and abuse – such as police officers, general practitioners, health visitors, probation officers, teachers, voluntary sector and social workers. You should have two years’ experience of working with survivors of intentional and/or unintentional violence and be able to demonstrate an ability to study at master’s level. It is not necessary to have a first degree.
How long is the course?
This is a two year, part time course that has the opportunity for flexibility in timing and module choice.
Individual modules can be taken as stand alone courses or you may wish to build on these to obtain the PG Diploma or MSc.

* Post Graduate Diploma - Interprofessional Practice - Higher Specialist Award in Social Work (Children, Young People, Families and their Carers)
General Social Care Council post qualifying awards in respect of MSc/PG Dip in Interprofessional Practice: Society, Violence and Practice
* MSc in Interprofessional Practice - Advanced Award in Social Work (Adults)
* Post Graduate Diploma in Interprofessional Practice: Higher Specialist Award (Adults)
Social workers who choose to take either of the above MSc routes will be eligible to register for the above post-qualifying awards in addition to their academic award.
We are currently in the process of applying for post-qualifying award approval of our MSc Interprofessional Practice Mental Health route.
Bursaries may be available for registered social workers.
