ObjectivesMIME is designed to enable students to become an independent scientist, skilled in research techniques and principles relating to an interdisciplinary engineering and medical approach. Students work alongside academics of all levels and, depending on the research chosen, there is opportunity to network with an extensive group of eminent scientists, academics and clinicians within a chosen field.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements: A minimum 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in engineering, biomedical sciences or natural sciences.Or, for intercalating medical students: Satisfactory completion of years 1-4 of Medicine (MBChB) without failure of an examination International candidates require an equivalent of a 2:1 degree in the above areas of study from a reputed university.
Academic titleInterdisciplinary Medicine and Engineering MSc
Course descriptionCourse description
The MSc in Interdisciplinary Medicine and Engineering (MIME) has been developed as a response to the increasing national demand for graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply interdisciplinary medicine/engineering approaches to the development of novel therapies for healthcare. The aim is to investigate the clinical application of these converging disciplines for the benefit of society, healthcare and the economy.
MIME aims to equip medical students with knowledge of engineering practices that have the potential to advance medical practice; similarly engineering students explore medical problems which could be addressed through the innovative development of bioengineering technologies.
MIME graduates will have the advantage of being experienced in working at this cutting-edge interdisciplinary boundary; a new, expanding area which will generate extensive intellectual property and potential for commercial development, making it ripe with opportunity whether you are looking to establish a career in research, industry or medicine.
The MSc is research-driven, providing students with the opportunity to work alongside interdisciplinary experts, from clinicians and scientists to engineers and physicists, on novel cutting-edge projects. A structured programme of seminars, workshops and master-classes delivered by prominent academics and industrials will provide the foundation for the research that follows.
Module details
The course is structured around a 5:1 split between research projects and taught elements; with most of the formal teaching carried out via seminars and tutorials.
During the seminar and tutorial course units, students will acquire:
-Skills in critical analysis of scientific and medical literature together with research methodology
-Intellectual skills, such as understanding interpreting and managing information, which will be key to effective participation in the tutorials
-Transferable skills, such as time management and written and oral communication, which will be necessary for the assessed components
