University of Reading, School in Arts and Humanities

Información

The Graduate School in Arts and Humanities (GSAH) was founded in 2004 with the aim of enhancing the experience of postgraduate students. Based in Old Whiteknights House, a refurbished nineteenth-century building at the heart of the main Whiteknights campus next to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the School is open 24-hours a day throughout the year and provides study space and a range of up-to- date facilities for the exclusive use of postgraduate research students. The aim of the GSAH is to complement the facilities and supervision offered by departments. All those studying for the degree of PhD or MPhil in the arts and humanities automatically become members of the School as well as of their academic departments.

The GSAH runs a course of generic training events for postgraduate research students. It acts as a 'clearing house' for information about grant opportunities, conferences and seminars, and training opportunities outside the university. It offers support for student-organised colloquia and workshops, especially those that cross disciplinary boundaries. Above all, it provides opportunities for graduate students to meet together and discuss common interests, both intellectual and social.

Within Old Whiteknights House there are meeting rooms, a resource room, photocopying, computing and scanning facilities, and a social area where students can meet and talk informally  over coffee or lunch. Importantly, it also offers study space for many students, either shared office space for those working full-time at the University or hot-desks' for part-time students and those working away, whose visits to the campus are less frequent.
