Course descriptionCOURSE INFORMATION
The course has been designed to give a more flexible approach to study. For each module, you would be given a set of teaching materials originally developed for the distance learning delivery of the course. This will enable you to select your own learning times to fit around your personal and business commitments. In addition, you may attend any of the optional tutorial sessions offered in support of the course.
Part-time delivery of this course consists of a set of eight taught modules:
-Databases
-Web Programming and Management
-Systems Analysis and Design
-Project Management and Research Methods
-Strategic Management & Information Systems
-IT Consultancy Practice
-Human Computer Interaction
-Social & Current Issues in Computing
-and the Dissertation Project
The Databases and Web Programming & Management modules include practical computer work. IT Consultancy Practice could also include the development of a software solution for a client. The remaining modules offer a more theoretical approach to the subject. For the practical work, you may choose to work at home on your own computer or at your place of employment. Should you wish you may come to the university and use the computers in our laboratories or the in the Open Access Area in Pandon Building, which is available 24/7.
On successful completion of four modules, you would be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate. Normally, however, we would expect you to continue the course by studying the remaining four modules to progress to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma, and then undertake the Dissertation Project to complete the full programme and be awarded the MSc Information Technology.
CAREERS
As a graduate from this course you could consider a variety of careers in the IT industry, such as software engineering, systems analysis, website development and management, IT consultancy and IT software training. Alternatively, you could return to your current field of expertise with a greater understanding of the nature, capabilities and limitations of computer systems.
