  • Course description Introduction

The course provides Qualified Teacher Status to teach ICT to 11-18-year-olds in line with Department of Education and Skills standards. Information and communication technology (ICT) in secondary schools is changing rapidly. It is a particularly interesting and exciting subject to teach. The course is varied with workshops, lectures and seminars. It is demanding and you will have to work hard to succeed. There are excellent career prospects.

You study current educational developments and maintain close contact with schools throughout the course.

    Teaching and Assessment

There is a variety of assessed work, including essays, teaching packages, a portfolio demonstrating your IT skills and evidence to support the completion of all the Qualifying to Teach Standards.

    School Placements

You have two teaching placements in different schools and gain experience of teaching the 11-18 age range. We have an extensive network of school placements throughout the region. Whilst you are on teaching placement you will observe and assist experienced teachers of ICT, and teach classes yourself.

You may teach ICT to beginners, GCSE and A Level groups, and both children and adults. You will also assist teachers of other subjects, such as English, by supporting their use of ICT in the classroom.

During secondary school placements you will become involved with the pastoral, social or academic aspects of school life. You will also visit a primary school in order to gain an overall view of today's education system.

    Career Opportunities

Many students have a wide range of vocational experience, so career prospects are excellent. There was an exceptionally high employment rate across all PGCE subject areas according to the University's 2005/06 Destinations Survey. Some subjects achieved a 100 per cent employment rate.
