Icelandic Language Courses

  • Course description Icelandic is a north Germanic language, the official language of Iceland and the mother tongue of the Icelandic people. Its closest relative is Faroese and can be partially understood by a small number of Norwegians as well, depending on their dialect.

Iceland, officially the Republic of Iceland is a country in northwestern Europe, comprising the island of Iceland and its outlying islets in the North Atlantic Ocean between Greenland, Norway, the British Isles, and the Faroe Islands. It has a population of just over 307,000 inhabitants. Its capital and largest city is Reykjavík.

Iceland is a highly developed country with the economy historically dependent on the fishing industry, which still provides almost 40% of export earnings and employs 8% of the work force. Nowadays the tourism sector is also expanding, with the recent trends in ecotourism and whale-watching. The government remains opposed to EU membership, primarily because of Icelanders' concern about losing control over their fishing resources.
