Humanities and Cultural Studies (PhD - MPhil)

  • Objectives This degree is a three-year full-time programme taught by the London Consortium, which brings together five internationally renowned institutions: the Architectural Association School of Architecture, Birkbeck, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), the Science Museum, and Tate.

    The degree offers you the chance to gain a broad grounding in theories, methods and knowledge in the humanities and cultural studies, combined with a substantial piece of original research. Year 1 is the theoretical core course, with Years 2 and 3 consisting of supervised doctoral research.

    Theses are presented for examination for the award of PhD degree from the University of London.

    The Consortium welcomes applications for multidisciplinary research projects in the humanities, sciences and social sciences.

    Study resources
    You will have access to a stimulating programme of research development workshops, graduate seminars and a rich and varied choice of events and lecture programmes.

    In addition to the resources available to you as a postgraduate student at Birkbeck, you will also have some privileged access to the activities of the other participating institutions (Tate, the ICA, the Science Museum), as well as access to the expertise of faculty members who work in those institutions.
