  • Course description Introduction

History is an engaging, challenging and dynamic subject. The one-year PGCE enables you to teach from Key Stage 3 to Advanced level. The course offers the opportunity to explore a wide range of issues concerning history education. It covers everything from the rationale behind the curriculum to the use of the local environment in history and the acquisition and development of historical skills such as chronological understanding and interpretation.

We consider how to teach sensitive content such as the Holocaust and liaise with outside agencies, museums and archivists to provide a course that prepares trainee teachers for their first classroom post and beyond.

You will study current educational developments and develop the skills necessary to teach pupils in your chosen age range and maintain close contact with schools throughout the course.

    Teaching and Assessment

Continuous assessment is via subject assignments, ICT portfolios, coursework, periodic reports, teaching portfolios and providing evidence to support the completion of all the Qualifying to Teach standards.

    School Placements

The course features extensive school placements throughout the region. We arrange two secondary school placements with visits to linked primary schools. Placements provide an opportunity to become involved with various aspects of school life, whether pastoral, social or academic.

    Career Opportunities
Our students have a wide range of vocational experience, so career prospects are excellent. There was an exceptionally high employment rate across all PGCE subject areas according to the University's 2005/06 Destinations Survey. Some subjects achieved a 100 per cent employment rate.
