History of Philosophy (MA)

    A First or Second class UK honours degree, or equivalent is required.

  • Course description Course Description:

    The programme offers postgraduate teaching in topics in the historiography and history of philosophy and emphasises the enhancement of skills relevant to advanced philosophical research. The MA is assessed by four essays of 4000 words each and a dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words.

    Course content: Research Methods and Training, a Core Course, three Optional Courses, and a Dissertation (most courses are available on a two-year cycle).

        * Philosophy of Language in the Two Traditions
        * Origins of the Analytic and Continental Traditions: Epistemology and the Philosophy of Language

        * Rousseau's Social and Political Philosophy
        * British Philosophy from Francis Bacon to Hume
        * Marx
        * Metaphysics
        * Nietzsche: The Will to Power
        * Philosophy of Science in the Nineteenth Century
        * Early Twentieth Century Analytic Philosophy: Frege and Wittgenstein
        * Philosophy of Mind
        * Philosophy of Law
        * Contemporary Themes in Analytic Philosophy
        * Knowledge and Perception
        * Social Theory: The Frankfurt School
