  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements The MSc/PgDip course is open to graduates who are either: Health practitioners with a strong commitment to education, or Intending college/university lecturers who wish to develop clinically and educationally. All applicants must be able to demonstrate that they will be able to satisfy the requirements relating to teaching practice and that they will have access to a recognised teaching environment. This may involve a combination of both classroom and practice aspects (60 days). Nurse, midwife or health visitor entrants wishing to record a teaching qualification should read the publication NMC (2006) Standards to support learning and assessment in practice.

  • Course description Introduction

    Since health care is increasingly provided through a multi-disciplinary team, the opportunity to study with colleagues from other professional groups becomes ever more important. This student centre multi-disciplinary course will enable you to gain an educational qualification and develop your individual professional interests.

    You will have the opportunity to analyse educational provision in health related professions and develop strategies for practice based health professional education. You will study the theories and processes of teaching and learning and then apply them to strategies within the field of health care. The teaching practice placement requirement is 60 days.

    Course Structure

    The course is taught for 24 weeks per year and you will complete your dissertation over the following summer. Part-time options are available.

    All students wishing to achieve a recordable teaching qualification will study the core modules:

    -Teaching and Learning: Theories, Processes and Strategies in Health Professional Education
    -Assessment of Health Professional Education
    -Practice of Health Professional Education (includes 60 days of teaching practice)

    You will also undertake three optional modules. Some examples include:

    -Health Professional Accountability
    -Ethical Dimensions of Health Care Practice
    -Self Development (learning contract)

    Students progressing to an MSc undertake a further core research module and a dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words which will demonstrate the ability to undertake research at postgraduate level.

    Career Opportunities

    The course is designed to prepare you to teach health professionals and to apply research based knowledge to practice. Successful students are qualified to progress to lecturer/practice educator roles.

    Special Features

    This course meets the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Higher Education Academy for those teaching in Higher Education. It does not enable you to register with the NMC as a nurse or midwife.

    You are required to undertake a 60-day teaching practice experience. Professional Body Accreditation Nurses, midwives and health visitors may achieve an approved teaching qualification and may be eligible for full membership of the Higher Education Academy.
