Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Engineering

  • Entry requirements * BSc in Engineering/Physical Science based subject * A Health Professions Council (HPC) approved Foundation Degree in Clinical Technology or equivalent portfolio evidence of I- level academic achievement Candidates with appropriate professional qualifications e.g. Incorporated or Chartered Engineer will be considered in conjunction with criteria identified above. Admission will also be subject to a successful CRB check. This course is NHS funded and requires no payment of course fees.

  • Course description This new course is an exciting collaboration between the Health Design & Technology Institute and the Faculty of Engineering and Computing. The course is designed to meet the requirements of new entrant to the profession of rehabilitation engineering and includes all the necessary educational and training elements required for registration on the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists (VRCT).

    This course is NHS funded and requires no payment of course fees.

    Reasons to choose Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Engineering

    This is the only NHS funded Graduate Diploma course in rehabilitation engineering.

    The course dovetails with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) Clinical Technologists Training Programme and will be delivered in collaboration with IPEM Accredited Training Centres.

    Rehabilitation engineering is a developing profession, and with new areas of assistive technology developing rapidly there will is a demand for technology based professionals who have excellent clinical skills.

    The course is taught by a team of highly qualified engineers and allied health professionals. High profile subject experts are used to provide expertise in specialist areas.

    Many applicants will be in NHS training posts prior to commencing this course and their career prospects are excellent.     Skills developed on this course will help students progress through their career in rehabilitation engineering; specialising in clinical, managerial or research aspects of the profession.

    Course content

    The course consists of 4 modules, two taught modules, a clinical placement module and a project module, completed over 18 months full time.

    The taught modules will equip students with the fundamentals of rehabilitation engineering, including anatomy, physiology and pathology, biomechanics and clinical practice. In addition, Rehabilitation Engineering sub-specialism's will be taught.

    Clinical placements will be based on level 4 and 5 competencies as defined through the NHS career framework.
