Course description
This is a one year full-time programme for non-law graduates who wish to start training for a career at the Bar or as a solicitor. City's CPE conversion course has an unrivalled reputation with the profession for the quality of its teaching and the ability of its students.
The 7 foundation subjects are taught over one year through lectures, classes and tutorials which occupy 17-18 hours each week. Instruction in the use of legal materials and in legal research methods (including use of electronic retrieval systems) is an integral part of the course.
The academic programme and examinations are of first degree level; students must cope with a volume of work which is normally taken by undergraduates over at least 18 months. Assessment is based on written examinations held at the end of the course and on coursework.
Candidates who successfully complete all components of the course at The City Law School are awarded the University's Graduate Diploma in Law. Candidates who have enrolled with approved exemptions will be certified as having met the CPE requirements. In both cases, this satisfies the academic stage requirements for admission to a Bar Vocational Course (if you intend to practise at the Bar) or to take a Legal Practice Course (if you want to become a solicitor).
Holders of the University's Graduate Diploma in Law may obtain an LLB degree at City by taking additional course units by part-time study. The CPE is also accepted as an entry qualification for the LLM degrees offered by the School.

Bar Vocational and Legal Practice Courses
Students wishing to qualify to practise must, after completing the CPE or an LLB degree, undertake either a Bar Vocational Course (barristers) or a Legal Practice Course (solicitors). The City Law School offers both of these courses. Our LPC carries the top quality ratings from the Solicitors Regulation Authority. (The Bar Standard Board does not rate BVC courses in the same way.)
Graduates of The City Law School's academic programmes can be guaranteed places on the School's Legal Practice Course (subject to attaining the minimum grades required). Although the Bar Council does not allow provider institutions to guarantee places on the Bar Vocational Course, progression on to the School's BVC is encouraged.
