Graduate Diploma in Digital Lens-based Image-making
ObjectivesThe Graduate Diploma Digital Lens-Based Image-Making is aimed at designers, artists and photographers who wish to explore this innovative new area of imaging. It acknowledges the importance of and relationship between traditional photography skills and the development of new methodologies in image-capture, manipulation and output arising from developments in digital imaging technology. This course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and study-visits. Collectively, these activities provide you with the skills and knowledge to develop a portfolio of high quality visual work that will support your progression into professional practice or higher level study. As a student on this course, you will also benefit from the School of Graphic Design’s lecture programme and the wide experience of the School’s technical and academic staff. On successful completion of the Diploma, students will have established a portfolio of image solutions and process experimentation that has currency towards a particular career or preparation for Master’s level study.
Entry requirementsApplicants should have a degree in a related subject or be able to demonstrate an interest in digital imaging through a folio of work. Mature students and/or those with related industrial experience can also be considered. International students require English to IELTS 6.5. Once an application is made, students will be invited for an interview and asked to bring a portfolio of work, which clearly demonstrates a developed interest in the subject area.

Course descriptionStructure
The course is broken down into units that feature below:
Unit 1 is Digital Imaging Workflows: a chance to explore and compare traditional and cutting-edge digital imaging and explore hybrid mixed techniques.
Unit 2 is Digital Imaging Applications where you can put all that you have learned into practice and build a folio of images. (20 Credits)
There are also electives, which are shorter units.You choose two of the four: Digital Landscape and Panoramas, Digital Studio Capture, Digital Archiving and Orientation and Navigation where you can explore more time based and interactive ways to present your work.
Unit 3 Project Proposal: Research Methods (20 credits) and finally Unit 4 Research in Practice (40 credits) which are taught alongside each other.
The Diploma covers researching, developing and producing a major photographic project. This could be anything from a website or exhibition to a book or lecture tour. These sorts of projects often grow and change, therefore Units 3 & 4 are assessed together at the end of the course.
