Graduate Certificate-Diploma in Digital Surface Design
ObjectivesThis course provides an opportunity to explore the application of computer-aided design and digital imaging within the field of surface pattern and surface print. It was designed to enable art and design graduates and creative practitioners to develop the knowledge and skills to use computer aided software and digital imaging and colour manipulation techniques in the development of design ideas and to render these as printed samples. You will have access to software and hardware, with output to ink jet and conventional screen printing. Our print and design studios will enable you to develop designs for textiles, T-shirts and leisure wear, ceramics, glass, paper and board. Core studies include Computer-Aided Design and Surface Print. Computer-Aided Design provides opportunities to develop skills through theory and practice in image acquisition, rendering and manipulation and design development. Teaching and learning is project led, with opportunities for you to present your work for peer and staff assessment. Surface Print will enable you to explore ink jet printing applications for textiles; conventional screen printing and heat transfer imaging on a range of different surfaces and materials. Our aim is to provide opportunities for students to develop and extend their design vocabulary through the creative medium of print. The course also provides access to a range of project based electives, which will allow you to specialise in an area of particular interest. The electives include: Colour Imaging, Surface Design for Ceramics, T-Shirts and Leisure Wear and Surface Design for Glass.
Entry requirementsAn applicant will be considered for admission who has already achieved an educational level equivalent to an Honours Degree. This educational level may be demonstrated by a combination of formal qualifications and/or experiential learning which, taken together, can be demonstrated to be equivalent to formal qualifications otherwise required. All applicants will be interviewed.
Academic titleGraduate Certificate/Diploma in Digital Surface Design
Course descriptionStructure
The Certificate course consists of:
Two specialist units
. Design origination
. Design realisation surfaces and substrates
Plus two elective choices from;
. Creation for print
. Experimental screenprinting
. New technologies
The Diploma phase continues the development of digital surface design and offers a self-select final major project in a subject of choice associated with the course specialism. The project is research based and is presented through a practice unit developed from a feasibility study carried out in the project proposal unit.
The Graduate Diploma consists of the following specialist units:
. Project proposal: Research methods
. Research in practice
In addition to the skills taught on the course, students are eligible for three short, skill-based additional courses.Within the College there are a wide variety of subjects, including visual thinking and life drawing.
Career Prospects
The programme offers graduates a range of opportunities associated with surface design developments including paper, hard surfaces and textile based activities. Graduates might reasonably be expected to continue their own practices or be introduced to the wider aspects of commercial design, specific product development or studio production.
