Geomorphology Master in Science by Research

  • Objectives a) Provide students with a detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of geomorphological methods, techniques and approaches that support advanced-level research in geomorphology b) Enable students to undertake a programme of original research in a selected area of geomorphology c) Acquire a range of professional transferable skills that will provide students with training in respect of a range of employment opportunities in areas related to geomorphology.
  • Entry requirements Successful applicants must normally hold at least a lower second Honours degree in a related subject. Applicants with a lower class of degree and/or from outside of these areas will be considered individually and are usually interviewed prior to being offered a place. Applicants without a first degree, but who have relevant work experience, are also considered on an individual basis.
  • Academic title Geomorphology Master in Science by Research
  • Course description The subject of geomorphology has expanded greatly in recent years with many new and innovative areas of scientific enquiry being undertaken. This course is designed to provide you with the advanced level research skills required to enable you to undertake a piece of original research into a chosen area of geomorphology.

    Future prospects

    The research programme will also be of value to students who wish to progress towards an academic or research-orientated career, providing a manageable but a stimulating introduction to geomorphological processes and landscape response.

    Course content

    Potential research projects relevant to the programme includes:

        * Hillslope processes and catchment responses
        * High-magnitude and low-frequency extreme geomorphological events
        * The nature and consequences of coastal change arising from 'global warming' and relative sea level rise
        * Arctic and alpine geomorphology, fluvial processes and landscape change.

    The Masters by Research in Geomorphology will appeal to those presently employed or seeking employment within a wide range of public and private sector agencies concerned with the dynamics and conservation of the Earth's landscape. Interest may also come from overseas students who wish to develop skills and/or undertake research that would be of value to their own country.

    Additional support for international students
