Geographies of Gender Master in Science by Research
ObjectivesThe course aims to: (a) Provide students with a substantive knowledge and understanding of a variety of methods, techniques and approaches that support advanced-level research in the social sciences (b) Allow and encourage students to pursue a sustained programme of original research into a chosen aspect of gender and geography (c) Develop a range of professional competencies and personal transferable skills that will enable students to pursue a variety of employment opportunities within the broad fields of gender or geography.
Entry requirementsSuccessful applicants must normally hold at least a lower second Honours degree in a related subject. Applicants with a lower class of degree and/or from outside of these areas will be considered individually and are usually interviewed prior to being offered a place. Applicants without a first degree, but who have relevant work experience, are also considered on an individual basis.

Course descriptionGender is increasingly recognised as a potent force shaping human relationships and the social world as well as creating specific places and experiences of space. This course is designed to equip you with the advanced-level research skills required to support a substantive piece of original research into a chosen aspect of geography and gender.
The Masters by Research in Geographies of Gender will appeal to those currently employed or seeking employment with a wide range of public/private sector agencies concerned with social equity and changing social trends as well as more specifically with women's or men's issues. Interest may come from overseas students keen to develop skills and/or undertake research that might be applicable to their own situation.
Future prospects
The programme will benefit students contemplating an academic or research-oriented career, providing a manageable but stimulating introduction to the world of advanced level research in a highly topical subject area.
Course content
Potential research projects relevant to the programme include:
* gender roles and gender relations in the workplace
* making and experiencing 'homespace'
* gender and nationhood, and
* gender and consumption practices and meanings.
