Mature students do not need formal qualifications for the Westminster Kingsway course. Applications are assessed on an individual basis; you would normally be invited to undertake a short interview and assessment. Course descriptionSpecially designed foundation courses have been developed for air transport engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and mechanical engineering.
Alternative degree entry routes
These courses are tailored specifically for people who wish to apply for an engineering degree at City University London, but who do not have the necessary entry qualifications. For example, they would suit mature applicants who need to bring their technical knowledge and study skills up to date, or applicants with some science background at a lower level who need to develop their mathematical and laboratory skills before embarking on a degree course. For some students the courses may also be of interest as an alternative to retaking A-levels or equivalent. As a student on one of these courses, you spend a preparatory year as a City student, but take most of your classes at a college nearby. If you successfully complete the foundation course, you will automatically be accepted onto the first year of the BSc or BEng course at City for which you have been preparing.
Course content
Electrical, Electonic and Information Engineering
The foundation course allows you access to BEng, BSc/BEng degrees in the following areas of Electrical Engineering: • Biomedical Engineering

• Multimedia and Internet Systems Engineering
• Media Communication Systems
The foundation course for these degrees is taught at the City and Islington College and City University. It covers electrical and electronic principles, microelectronics systems, science, mathematics, communications, information technology, technology, experimental engineering and study skills.
Mechanical, Civil and Aeronautical Engineering
The course also allows access to BEng, BSc/BEng degrees to the following areas of Mechanical, Civil and Aeronautical Engineering: • Air Transport Engineering
• Civil Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
The foundation course for these degrees is taught at Westminster Kingsway College. This is a specially designed course that provides a foundation in mathematics, physics and engineering principles, information technology, computing, and study and communications skills.
Teaching and assessment
As a foundation course student, you will take most of your classes at the relevant college. Some laboratory classes are taken in the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at City University London. Both courses emphasise tutorial support and study skills, and the Westminster Kingsway College course has been specifically designed for mature students who lack formal qualifications or who are returning to study after some years. There is some flexibility to change to a different engineering course after the foundation year, subject to the agreement of the course director concerned. Foundation course students, both at the University and at the relevant college, may use the study and social facilities at both institutions. Assessment is by a combination of formal examinations and coursework.
