Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics (Dental Specialties) MSc
Entry requirementsThis programme is designed for dental practitioners who wish to further their knowledge in fixed and removable prosthodontics. This specialty comprises the diagnosis, management and treatment of missing or worn teeth using fixed and removable prostheses, including implant-supported or stabilised restorations. In addition to this, students will be allocated to the temporomandibular disorders clinic.

Course descriptionModule details
The MSc has the following three modules:
Specialist clinical component (90 credits)
Full time graduate students are required to attend the clinical component for six sessions per week over the 45 weeks. Part time students are required to attend the clinical component for three sessions per week in each of the two years.
Seminars are normally conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September to December. Guest lecturers, visits to selected dental laboratories and other selected prosthodontic units are an integral part of the clinical component.
Research methods and statistics (30 credits)
This essential core module is common to all students on MSc programmes, irrespective of their chosen clinical specialty.
It is aimed at developing competence in the design, data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical research projects. Tuition is in lectures, seminars and hands-on computer exercises.
Dissertation (60 credits)
The aim of this module is to offer research training in identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project.
Teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage the student to take responsibility for their own learning and to integrate work with formal educational activities.
Examples of dissertations submitted include:
-An investigation to evaluate fracture resistance of fibre-reinforced crowns
-The effect of isolating solution on the attachment and retention of candidal species on denture acrylic
-A comparative assessment of dentists' perceptions of smile aesthetics in facial and dental views
-The outcomes of providing dental implants to patients with risk of osteoporosis of the mandibular bone
-A comparison of prosthodontic treatment plan prescribing provided by vocational dental practitioners and their trainees in England
