FdA Dental Technology

Objectives The Foundation Degree is planned to enable an individual to be able to register with the General Dental Council as a Dental Technician.
Entry requirements Entry requirements Candidates must have good health and be able to physically carry out the practical activities associated with the professional role as described by the General Dental Council requirements for statutory registration of Professions Complementary to Dentistry.

Programme

The Foundation Degree recognises the higher level technical skills of dental technicians in the design, manufacture and quality assurance of custom made dental devices such as dental bridges, braces and dentures.

All modules are essential to gain the award. Approximately 4.5 modules are studied during one academic year. Work based modules which are an essential component of the Degree are studied in the workplace and develop the individuals vocational competence. Achievement of the work based learning modules links to the normal skill training offered in the workplace and is required for achievement of the Foundation Degree.

Students can expect to study the following modules:

    * Oral Biomedical Sciences
    * Professional Practice
    * Dental Biomaterials Science
    * Integrated Studies A and B (work based learning)
    * Dental Technology Techniques
    * Removal Prosthodontics (Partials)
    * Removal Prosthodontics (Complete)
    * Removal Orthodontics
    * Fixed Prosthodontics (A and V)
    * Fixed Prosthodontics (Bridges).

The Foundation Degree has been designed as a progression from the BTEC Award in Dental Technology. Once students have successfully completed the Foundation Degree they can either enter into relevant employment or progress on to the BSc Hons in Dental Technology, which is run at Castle College, Nottingham (one of our Associate Colleges)on a part-time basis (2 years).

The BSc is also available for Dental Technologist who are registered with the GDC who want to expand their knowledge and the quality of their own dental devices this final part of the degree provides as new outlook on the fundamentals of advanced dental technology techniques and the higher level research development associated with this type of activity.
