FdA Book Conservation

Objectives This new two-year FdA Book Conservation course has been designed by conservation educators in close collaboration with the British Library and the book conservation departments of major UK cultural institutions. The course focuses on the conservation of books while exploring the broader context of conservation as a profession. The multi-disciplinary nature of conservation, with its combination of the humanities, sciences and craft skills, is particularly appealing to those with a strong interest in cultural heritage who enjoy a variety of approaches to learning.
Entry requirements . 1 GCE A Level in a relevant subject (for example English, History, Art History, Philosophy, or a Science) . 3 GCSEs (grade C or above) including English and Maths or a Science subject . Students will be asked to bring work demonstrating manual/craft skills . EU/International students must show proof of equivalent qualification and IELTS 5.5 in English on enrolment . Applications are welcomed from mature students and the College takes into consideration prior learning, alternative qualifications and experience

Programme

Year 1

You will learn skills and techniques to perform investigations and treatments appropriate to your projects. Visits will provide opportunities to speak to a range of individuals for whom books are a central concern. Alongside your other activities you will be introduced to one particular book to provide a focus for your thoughts about the history, use and care of books. You will also learn about the broader field of cultural conservation, its history, theory, ethics, practice and contemporary importance. As you develop your hand skills and build a body of scientific, technical and historical knowledge you will discuss your growing understanding in a reflective learning journal.

Year 2

You will spend a substantial amount of time working with one of our industry partners in a major institution. Here you will work as part of a team developing your skills and learning good ethical practice in the workplace. You will take part in a Partners Day at College where you will have the opportunity to meet professionals from other partner institutions and share experiences with your fellow students. In your final year you will make a curated presentation of your project work and have the opportunity to discuss this with invited members of the conservation profession.
