FdA Advice Work

Objectives This exciting new programme is one of the few available in the country. It is designed to enable those already working in the field to build on their work experience to gain a professional qualification, or those who are interested in gaining work experience and an appropriate qualification. It has been designed to meet the National Occupational Standards (NOS) and will meet the training needs of NGOs and other providers of advice to the public who are unable to provide such training in-house. It will enable students to gain a higher education qualification by getting credit for their work-based learning, as well as developing their knowledge of key areas of advice and paralegal work.

Course description Course structure

Full-time students take eight modules per year for two years. Part-time students take one to three modules per year.

Modules

The core modules are designed to impart legal knowledge, develop problem-solving techniques and provide contextual analysis and research skills. There will be close liaison with the students place of work, with a mentoring system enabling students to apply in the work place what they learn at University. Skills will be developed in client care, case management and supervision.

Optional Modules

Students can complement their course of study with a number of advice-based modules from a range including housing, employment, welfare, debt and consumer rights and benefits. Students undertake an analysis of the law, including practice and procedure, in each of the chosen subject areas.
