  • Course description COURSE INFORMATION
    Family therapy and systemic practice are models of intervention used by a variety of professional within Health and Social Care. The programme provides a framework for conceptualising problems and intervening at a variety of levels of the system including family, professional network, organisation and community. The course aims to familiarise students with the theories, methods and techniques associated with the major models of family therapy.

    The programme includes a combination of theoretical and teaching sessions at the University, along with ongoing practice application groups. Students also participate in regular Personal and Professional Development sessions aimed at facilitating self-awareness and enhancing their abilities as family therapists. Qualifying level students will also attend practice placement one morning or afternoon per week where they will undertake live-supervised family therapy.

    COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
    A range of assessment strategies are used, including written assignments, a dissertation, and evaluation of practice development. Students are required to submit a portfolio which includes evidence of supervised systemic practice and evidence of academic study of systemic theories.

    ACCREDITATION
    The postgraduate certificate is accredited at intermediate level by the Association for Family Therapy (AFT). The MA level of the programme had been developed to meet AFT criteria for qualifying level training in family psychotherapy and is now fully accredited.
