Extended PGCEs Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry

  • Objectives This extended programme is based upon an initial subject knowledge audit and is tailored to your individual training requirements to give you the background knowledge and confidence required to undertake a PGCE in Mathematics or Science.
  • Entry requirements If you have a non-science-related degree and want to train to be a teacher in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry, but feel as though you lack the required level of knowledge in your specialist subject to teach at secondary school level, this programme could be for you. For example, you might be a Biochemistry graduate who needs to focus on straight Chemistry in order to feel sufficiently prepared to teach Chemistry at Key Stage 3 and 4 or a qualified accountant wishing to teach Mathematics.
  • Academic title Extended PGCEs Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
  • Course description What will I gain from this programme?

Professional training, delivered to the highest of standards, to help develop your current subject knowledge and fast-track you onto a relevant PGCE.

    What will I study?

You will start with an extensive subject knowledge and understanding audit, to identify your main subject strengths and areas for development, and enable your tutor to focus on your individual development needs. During nine to 12 months study on campus, you'll study from a choice of specialist subject modules.

On completion pf this subject study, you will be able to proceed confidently onto your PGCE.

    How will I study?

You will learn through your time in University and on placement. Learning activities include independent research, laboratory sessions, oral presentations, portfolio building, workshops and peer-teaching sessions.

    Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by a dedicated team of knowledgeable, experienced and supportive tutors who have the development of their trainees as a priority.

    How will I be assessed?

The assessment for the modules is a process of reflection on the learning process - you will be given coursework and examinations to study and, through further supported work, will tackle these assignments over an extended period.
