Executive Doctorate DBA

  • Entry requirements MBA or equivalent. Minimum of 4 years’ managerial experience.
  • Course description Suitable for experienced professionals, fast-track managers who already have an MBA or related business qualification and are seeking continual learning and progression in their field through rigorous research, or for those wishing to pursue an academic career by making the transition from practice.

Takes you on to a greater contribution in the workplace, giving you a higher intellectual platform to develop capabilities beyond those generally attainable through normal work. You will improve your ability to apply concepts to practice, to develop your thinking processes, increase writing skills and enhance professional credibility.

You will be taught by leading Cranfield academics contributing to both teaching and supervision. In the first year you are supported by our research training programme. As the issues addressed on the Executive Doctorate programme are real organisational problems, they tend to be cross-functional, requiring input from a number of faculty with differing expertise. This is reflected in our distinctive panel structure which is normally three members of School of Management faculty, rather than a single supervisor. This ensures the most relevant expertise is provided.
    Course description

The ultimate professional business qualification, this four-year part-time Executive Doctorate programme allows participants to remain in managerial or consulting roles while undertaking intellectually demanding projects that will make a difference to their organisation and career.

The programme focuses on three linked research projects, designed to explore the management issue of choice, including a review of literature, followed by two empirical projects and a linking document, highlighting the contribution of what has been confirmed, what has been developed and what is brand new.

The Executive Doctorate will help develop:

        * a 'multiple perspectives' approach to considering managerial problems or issues
        * the ability to conceptualise and apply theory to practice
        * a critical appreciation of participants’ insights and conclusions
        * the skills to undertake rigorous management research
        * the ability to reflect and build on learning skills in communicating and disseminating research to practitioner and academic audiences.

During the residential weeks we aim to:

        * assist in identifying and developing the research projects
        * provide the research skills to conduct the work successfully.

The research topic is driven by a critical and challenging management issue, rather than an academic research question. Although participants will be highly effective managers already, the Executive Doctorate will provide a new platform for developing thinking and learning abilities beyond those attainable through managerial experience alone.

Examples of current Executive Doctorate research topics are:

        * improving policy delivery in the UK public sector
        * strategic performance management in turbulent environments
        * collaborative leadership behaviour and team effectiveness
        * managing the business IT relationship in the financial services industry
        * the key factors affecting post-merger and acquisition business performance.
