Ethnicity, Globalisation, Culture (MA - Postgraduate Diploma - Postgraduate Certificate)
ObjectivesThe MA/PgDip/PgCert Ethnicity, Globalisation, Culture programme is orientated towards interdisciplinary debates more closely associated with sociology and cultural studies, while the MSc/PgDip/PgCert Ethnicity, Migration, Policy programme is more concerned with key debates in social policy. This programme offers a critical understanding of key interdisciplinary debates in social theory concerned with culture, identity and diaspora from local and global perspectives. Issues of gender, class and sexuality are addressed throughout the programme. Students are encouraged to develop skills necessary to carry out research of a high academic standard. This programme will be of particular interest to those involved in cultural industries and other statutory, private and not-for-profit sectors; those interested in developing an understanding of ethnicity and identity, culture and globalisation; and those who wish to pursue doctoral research.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements Good degree in social sciences, humanities or a relevant subject. Recent professional qualification and work experience may also be considered.
Course descriptionAll students start with the core module, Key Concepts of 'Race' and Ethnicity Studies, and have the opportunity to pursue particular relevant areas through option choice and dissertation topic. Option modules vary from year to year.
Teaching
A range of participatory teaching and learning methods, such as lectures, student-led teaching seminars, one-to-one tutorials and supervision.
Assessment
By coursework, although assessment formats may vary depending on option modules selected.
A dissertation of 10,000–12,000 words for the MA.
