Environmental Diagnostics and Management MSc-PgCert-PgDip
ObjectivesOur course is designed to prepare science and engineering graduates to meet the increasing demand in industry, consultancies and the education and public sectors for environmental advisors and officers. Their role in industry may be a primary consultative or managerial one or a secondary role to their first degree disciplines. The course is also a route towards further qualifications by research (PhD) and ultimately a career in research. The course aims to describe most topics from the basis of: * the underpinning science * the relevance of the topics and their appropriateness in environmental situations * examples of their implementation
Entry requirementsCandidates must possess, or be expected to achieve, a 1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree in a relevant discipline, or the international equivalent of these UK qualifications. Other relevant qualifications, together with significant experience, may be considered.
Academic titleEnvironmental Diagnostics and Management MSc/PgCert/PgDip
Course descriptionEnvironmental diagnostics is the process by which we assess an environmental situation and identify and quantify relevant components. We then design or implement solutions to reduce or eliminate the problems we have determined. This requires scientific knowledge of the environment, detection and monitoring techniques, remedial processes, as well as awareness of legislative frameworks and project management tools.
The course describes most topics from the basis of the underpinning science, the relevance and appropriateness of the topics in environmental situations and examples of their implementation. As well as benefiting from specialist technical modules, students will also develop a range of academic and transferable skills.
The course is accredited by the Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
The MSc course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project, and an individual design project.
Group project
The group project experience is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. It provides students with the opportunity to take responsibility for a consultancy-type project, working within agreed objectives, deadlines and budgets. For part-time students a dissertation can replace the group project.
Individual design project
The individual project, usually in collaboration with an external organisation, provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to carry out independent research, think and work in an original way, contribute to knowledge, and overcome genuine problems.
Modules:
The modules include lectures and tutorials and are assessed through written examinations and assignments.
Principles of Sustainability
Evaluating Sustainability
Risk Management, Toxicology and Health
Environmental Regulation in Practice
Process Emissions and Control
Soil Plant Environment Science
Water Quality Monitoring
Pollution Prevention and Remediation Technologies
A number of modules are shared with other environmental courses within the School of Applied Sciences, allowing students to engage with a wider peer group.
