English Study Course

  • Objectives The ESP will give you experience of studying at a university in the UK, it will also help you to settle into a different culture and a different language before you start an academic programme at the University of Salford or at any other university in the UK.
  • Entry requirements The programme is aimed at students who intend to progress onto university programmes at Foundation, Undergraduate or Postgraduate level.
  • Course description Overview

    The English Study Programme (ESP) is a full-time English language course for international students.  It is designed to improve your skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking and to develop your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. 

    If you successfully complete the English Study Programme at a high enough level the University of Salford will accept this as evidence of your English language ability

    What will I study?

    You will have 20 timetabled classes of 50 minutes each week (16 hours 40 minutes in total) plus homework and Open Learning in the Language Resource Centre. Classes run on five days of the week and are timetabled between 9:00 and 17:40.  You will usually have four to six classes each day.  Your classes will be organised into ten double lessons of 1 hour 40 minutes each.  You will be given your full timetable at the beginning of each block.

    When you arrive you will be given a placement test.  We use this test to place you in a group of students with a similar language level.  We normally have classes at three different levels: elementary, pre-intermediate and intermediate plus.  Each level has a different combination of classes.

    At elementary level you will have classes in:

    -General English
    -Reading
    -Writing
    -Listening and Speaking
    -Pronunciation
    -Academic Workshops and Tutorials
    -Computers for Academic Purposes
    -Developing Independent Language Learning (DILL)  

    At pre-intermediate level you will have classes in:

    -Academic English
    -IELTS Preparation and Practice
    -Use of English
    -Academic Workshops and Tutorials
    -Learning to Listen to Lectures
    -Pronunciation
    -General English
    -Computers for Academic Purposes
    -Developing Independent Language Learning (DILL)

    At intermediate plus level you will have classes in:

    -Academic English
    -IELTS Preparation and Practice
    -Use of English
    -Academic Workshops and Tutorials
    -Learning to Listen to Lectures
    -Pronunciation
    -General English
    -Computers for Academic Purposes
    -Developing Independent Language Learning (DILL)

    -Our end of course report means that you do not have to take an IELTS test for entry to other Salford programmes, as you are given an IELTS equivalent grade.

    Course dates and prices

    The English Study Programme runs for 31 weeks over the year.  It is divided into five blocks and students can join the programme at the beginning of any block.

    How to pay

    You will have to pay a deposit of £400 before registration and pay the remaining fees on registration. Please note that many of our students choose to pay full fees before registration in support of their visa application.

    Entry Requirements

    You should be at least 17 years old when you start the course.

    You need to have at least an elementary level of English when you arrive.
