Elected Member Professional Development (Postgraduate Certificate)

  • Objectives This programme offers a high-quality, transferable, postgraduate-level qualification to elected members and prospective elected members in local government in London. The programme has been launched in response to the growing demand from elected members themselves, local authorities, representative organisations and central government for a more professionalised local councillor base. The programme will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice of local governance and community leadership, informed by recent policy developments and research, and will help develop your intellectual skills and resources to enhance your effectiveness as a councillor.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements You should normally be an elected members of a local authority in the London area. Applications from prospective or selected candidates will also be considered. You should also be able to demonstrate: suitability to study at postgraduate level in this area a good command of English language, both written and spoken (IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent for applicants whose first langauge is not English).
  • Academic title Elected Member Professional Development (Postgraduate Certificate)
  • Course description The programme is structured around four core modules. On successful completion of the four modules, you will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate. The core modules are:

    -Local Governance – Past, Present, Future?
    -Leading in your Community
    -London Governance – Policies and Issues
    -Professional Practice Project.


    Teaching

    The programme utilises a range of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, workshops, seminars, problem-based learning, work-based learning and Saturday schools. In addition, students will be individually supported in developing portfolios of reflective professional practice.

    Assessment

    By coursework. Coursework for the first three modules will include written assignments and presentations. The work-based learning project will be assessed via a reflective practice portfolio and associated presentation.

    -Interviews will take place throughout the year.
