Economics MSc

  • Objectives This programme aims to provide balanced and rigorous training in modern theories and techniques in economics at the postgraduate level. Students are introduced to key concepts, ideas, tools and techniques via core and optional course units, and have the opportunity to combine and practice their skills in writing a summer dissertation. By the end of the programme, you should be able to read and understand the leading economics journals, develop economic models of your own from which to derive original results and offer a critique of underlying theories.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: UK 2:1 (or overseas equivalent) in economics/econometrics/agricultural economics or a related subject for direct MSc entry. UK 2:2 (or overseas equivalent) in economics/econometrics/agricultural economics or a related subject for entry onto the Postgraduate Diploma (where available).

  • Course description Module details

    There are typically five compulsory course units: Microeconomic Theory; Macroeconomic Theory; either Mathematical Methods in Economic Analysis or Mathematical Economics; either Introduction to Econometrics and Further Econometrics or Time Series Analysis and Intermediate Cross Section Econometrics or Advanced Econometric Theory and Topics in Advanced Econometrics. In addition, students take three approved optional course units from a wide range. Students sponsored by the ESRC are requested to take Research Design for Economists plus two optional units.
