  • Course description This very popular degree course allows students to prepare for careers in the field of accountancy while providing them with strong methodological and conceptual foundations through extensive study of economics. Modules in accountancy are taught by staff from Cass Business School and the economics modules are covered by staff within our department of Economics. Holders of this degree are entitled to a number of exemptions on professional licensing exams by several prestigious accountancy bodies. The course covers areas such as financial accounting, financial management and management accounting producing graduates that are highly sought after in accountancy and banking industries.

    Like our other economics degrees, it provides students with opportunities to broaden their horizons by taking advantage of European exchange and placement year schemes and through participation in the activities of the student-led Economics Society. Not only does this course provide you with the strong knowledge and skills required for a career in economics or accountancy it also provides you with a number of transferable skills which will be invaluable to you when seeking employment.

    Modules: BSc Economics and Accountancy

    Year 1

    Year 1 provides an introduction to both economics and accounting and is designed to provide a good foundation in economic theory, accounting, mathematics and statistical methods. You will study seven core modules and one mathematics module.

    Core modules include:

        * EC1008 Introduction to Microeconomics
        * EC1009 Introduction to Macroeconomics
        * IF1101   Introduction to Law
        * BS1002 Introduction to Financial and Management Accounting
        * EC1010 Data Analysis 1
        * EC1011 Data Analysis 2

    Choose ONE of the following options:

    OPTION A - Students without A-Level Mathematics

        * MA1653 Post GCSE Mathematics 1
        * MA1654 Post GCSE Mathematics 2

    OPTION B - Students with A-Level Mathematics

        * MA1658 Mathematics for Economists Post A-Level 1
        * MA1659 Mathematics for Economists Post A-Level 2

    Year 2

    In the second year the core skill areas are developed to a more advanced level. You will study six core modules.

    Core modules include:

        * Intermediate Microeconomics 1 and 2
        * Intermediate Macroeconomics 1 and 2
        * EC2017 Introductory Econometrics
        * BS2104 Financial Accounting
        * BS2203 Financial Analysis

    One elective will be chosen from the following list

        * EC2009 International Trade
        * EC2010 Money and Banking
        * EC2008 Open Economy Macroeconomics
        * EC2011 Health Economics
        * EC2018 Intermediate Mathematical Methods

    Year 3

    In the final year all students develop research skills by undertaking an original research project. In this year students can pursue interests from a range of elective modules. Around half of the modules are taught by staff from Cass Business School.

    Core modules include:

        * EC3010 Corporate Finance
        * BS3102 Financial Management
        * BS3206  Financial Accounting Theory
        * BS3106 Advanced Financial Accounting
        * BS2107 Management Accounting
        * EC3025 Company Law
        * EC3017 Applied Econometrics

    Plus a selection from the following:

        * EC3011 Introduction to Financial Derivatives
        * EC3012 International Finance
        * EC3013 Financial Economics
        * EC3014 Monetary Economics
        * EC3015 Regulation and Competition
        * EC3019 Labour Economics
        * EC3020 The Economics of Addiction
        * EC3021 Development Economics
        * EC3022 Industrial Organisation
        * EC3023 History of Economic Thought
        * EC3026 Economics of European Integration

    Placement Year (optional) in place of year 3
    If you wish to take a year out for career related placement, you may do so between years 2 and 3 of study. Such placements can be quite helpful in getting a head-start on a career in your prospective specialisation and in helping increase your optimism and enthusiasm for the final year of study. Details can be worked out with your personal tutor and with the help of the university’s career office.

    Duration of course

    3 years; 4 years with a year abroad or professional placement.

    Successful completion of the BSc in Economics and Accountancy presently entitles you to examination exemptions from the following professional accountancy bodies. It is possible to obtain exemptions in certain papers not listed below. For more information, you should contact the relevant professional body.

        * The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
          Part 1: 1.1 Preparing Financial Statements; 1.2 Financial Information for Management
          Part 2: 2.2 Corporate and Business Law; 2.4 Financial Management and Control.
        * The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
          Foundation: Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Management Accounting Fundamentals, Economics for Business, Business Law, Business Mathematics.
        * The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)
          Foundation: All papers.
        * The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
          Professional Stage: Commercial Law, Company Law.

    Teaching

    Description of the teaching elements of the course including: laboratory work, tutorials, lectures, field trips. etc; and the format of work submitted, ie, essays, exercises, case-study analysis, etc.

    Teaching involves lectures and small group seminars in which you have the opportunity to discuss the content of lectures or coursework with a member of staff. You will also have a personal tutor to help you with any academic or personal issues that arise.

    Assessment

    You will be assessed throughout the programme by coursework and by examinations. In the final year there is also an assessed research project. Your final degree classification will depend on results from coursework and examinations in your first, second and final years.
