Dutch Language Courses

Course description
Dutch is a west Germanic language spoken by around 22 million people, mainly in the Netherlands and Belgium, but also by smaller groups of speakers in parts of France and several former Dutch colonies. It is closely related to both English and German. Dutch is also the parent language of Afrikaans, one of the official languages of South Africa. Dutch and Afrikaans are to a large extent mutually intelligible, though both have separate spelling standards and dictionaries
One of the major dialect groups of Dutch, Flemish, is spoken in the southwestern part of the Netherlands and in Flanders, the northern half of Belgium. Officially, both Belgium and the Netherlands adhere to Standard Dutch and the difference between both dialects are comparable to the difference between American and British English.
Despite the Netherlands small geographic size, this prosperous country has the 16th largest economy in the world. Its main industrial activities are food processing, chemicals, petroleum refining and electrical machinery. The Dutch rank third worldwide behind the USA and France in terms of the value of their agricultural export. The Netherlands are a founding member of the Euro, which they adopted in 1999.
Flanders, which is the most dynamic region of Belgium, is also strongly export orientated. Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe after Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Flander's main exports are food, iron and steel, finished diamonds, textiles, petroleum products and plastics.
