Dual Honours: History with Dutch

  • Course description Level 1

    One compulsory History module (20 credits)

        * Paths from Antiquity to Modernity

    One History Option module from the following (20 credits)

        * Pagans, Christians and Heretics in Medieval Europe
        * The Disenchantment of the European World
        * The Making of the Twentieth Century
        * History of the United States, 1776-2004
        * The Transformation of Britain, 1800 to the present

    Two compulsory Dutch modules (20 credits each)

        * Beginners Dutch 1
        * Beginners Dutch 2

    Students with some previous knowledge of Dutch beyond CEF* level A2 are also catered for by means of an intermediate language course combined with an introduction to Dutch studies

    The remaining 40 credits may be made up of modules offered by the History Department (above) or modules from other departments, subject to the approval of the Department.

    Level 2

    Two compulsory History module (20 credits each)

        * Historians and History
        * Course Assignment

    Two History option modules, only one of which can be a document option (20 credits each)

        * Semester 1 Options
        * Semester 2 Options
        * Document Option

    One compulsory Dutch language module (20 credits)

        * Dutch Intermediate

    Advanced Dutch is available for those who began at intermediate level.

    Two compulsory Dutch thematic modules (10 credits each)

        * Introduction to Dutch Linguistics
        * Literature In Dutch 1

    You may take 20 credits from outside the History Department in place of one of the two History options, subject to the approval of the Department.

    Level 3

    One compulsory History core module (20 credits):

        * The Uses of History

    One compulsory History option module (40 credits):

        * Special Subject

    One History option module from the following (20 credits each):

        * Comparative Option
        * Short Dissertation

    One compulsory Dutch language module (20 credits)

        * Dutch Advanced

    Dutch for specialists is available for those who began at intermediate level.

    Two compulsory Dutch thematic modules (10 credits each)

        * Literature In Dutch 2
        * Dutch Sociolinguistics
