  • Objectives The programme is designed to provide: -a comprehensive knowledge of the main concepts and analytical skills on development finance, financial management and accounting in developing and emerging market economies -critical understanding of contemporary issues related to developemnt finance at the macro, sectoral and enterprise level -an understanding of the design, implementation, and evaluation of specific problems of development finance such as micro finance -an infrastructure for postgraduate research in the fields of development finance in developing and transitional economies

    Finance-related issues are increasingly important in development, and this programme provides a thorough understanding of the specific problems of development finance. It aims to equip students with the necessary skills to make a meaningful contribution to policy formulation and implementation in this field. It is designed to provide a coherent programme of study in the fields of financial development policy and financial management with specific reference to developing countries.

    Special features

    An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. Previous visits have included Bangladesh, India, the Philippines and Mexico. The cost of the visit is included in the programme fee. In addition, participants may undertake research visits to government and non-government agencies as well as other universities within the UK.

    Core course units typically include:

    -Economic Development;
    -Research Skills for Development
    -Issues in Development Finance;
    -Financial Markets and Corporate Governance
    -Micro Finance;
    -International Finance for Development;

    The remaining two optional course units may include:

    -Financial Analysis of Public Sector Restructuring
    -Small Enterprise Development
    -Economic Analysis of the Public Sector
    -Transformation in the World Economy
    -ICTs and Socio-Economic Development.

    Availability of optional units may vary from year to year.
