Data and Information Fusion (MSc)

  • Objectives Course Aims:
To offer knowledge and expertise within the interdisciplinary field of data and information fusion. During the past few years the field of data and information fusion has been increasingly taken up outside the defence community. There is now considerable interest in data fusion for industrial applications, in the aerospace and condition monitoring areas as well as banking (data fusion of multiple financial databases). The technology can be applied to real problems and used to make genuine (and marketable) improvements to processes and products.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements:
The course is suitable for graduates in Engineering, Computer Science or related areas. Applications will be considered from candidates who have at least an Upper Second class Honours degree, or equivalent professional qualification from a British or recognised overseas university. Applicants with relevant professional experience will be considered on an individual basis.

For students whose first language is not English, minimum English Language requirements are IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 (250 computer-based test).
  • Academic title Data and Information Fusion (MSc)
  • Course description Course Information:
Data and Information Fusion (DIF) is a relatively new interdisciplinary research activity. There is an acknowledged shortage of engineers trained in the principles of DIF in commerce, industry and government. There is only one transfer point within the UK of DIF technology from academe to current and potential user groups, the DIF Defence Technology Centre (DIF DTC), with which the Cardiff School of Engineering has well-established links.

The motivation for this MSc in Data and Information Fusion is to build on this successful relationship and to help establish a pool of DIF-aware graduates that can be recruited by government and industry to work on defence, homeland security and crime prevention applications. DIF is seen by the defence industries as an essential ingredient of network communication system integration; the "glue" binding systems-of-systems together and delivering "network-enabled capability."

Topics covered on the course include:

    -DIF fundamentals
    -Advanced DSP
    -Real time DSP
    -Advanced Communication Systems
    -Software and Data Management
    -Management in Industry
    -Intelligent Signal Processing
    -Geoinformatics
    -Human Computer Interaction
    -Research Methods
    -Advanced Communication Networks
    -Image Processing

    Special Feature:
A number of fully supported studentships are available each year for UK citizens from our industrial partners in the DIF DTC (General Dynamics), in addition to 3-4 EPSRC studentships for UK/EU applicants. The School has a limited number of studentships available for international students.
