dansk – Facts about the Danish language

The official language of Denmark, Danish is spoken by approximately 6 million native speakers worldwide, most of whom are based in Denmark and in the former Danish colonies of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.  However, a small community of Danish speakers continues today in Northern Germany, where Danish holds the official status of a protected minority language.

Part of the North Germanic group of languages, the Danish language is closely related to the Swedish and Norwegian languages.   Danish dialects are divided into three general dialect groups:  Østdansk or Københavnsk ("Eastern Danish") or ("Copenhagenish"), Ødansk ("Island Danish") and Jysk ("Jutlandish") with standard Danish ‘rigsdansk or rigsmål’ based around the dialect spoken in and around Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital city.

Danish is written using the Latin alphabet, with three additional letters: æ, ø, and å.
