ObjectivesTo offer knowledge and expertise for posts in community safety, the police, probation and prison services, prosecution service, private security, and in bodies such as anti-corruption inspectorates, the media and general government service. With appropriate research training, it provides the basis for proceeding to a PhD or other research.
Entry requirementsEntry Requirements:
Suitable for graduates in any social science, including sociology, politics, social policy, psychology and law. Candidates from other disciplines may also be eligible.
A good first degree or a recognised equivalent qualification is normally required. Non-graduates will be considered if they can demonstrate, through some recent and relevant professional experience, that they have the ability to undertake the course.
Where English is not a first language, or for those who have not had a substantial part of their education taught in the English language, a score of 575 on TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS is required.

Course descriptionCourse Description:
This programme provides students with analytical skills, an interdisciplinary knowledge base, and practical understanding of the settings in which crime and justice policies are devised and implemented. Coursework stresses the application of theory and research to understanding both criminal behaviour and the activities of agencies of social control.
All students follow the core modules:
Criminological Research Methods
Patterns of Crime
Theories of Crime
Sentencing and Penal Theory
Police and Policing.
They then choose from a short list of optional modules, such as:
Law and Criminal Process
Penal and Community Sanctions.
Those going on to complete the MSc undertake a 20,000 word dissertation.
