Course descriptionCourse Description
Dreamweaver and Photoshop are the two industry-standard programmes for the professional design and construction of your web pages. Students wishing to join this course will need to have some skills in working with computers and have completed the Beginners Web Design: Dreamweaver & Photoshop CS: BTEC Unit or eqivalent, download a factsheet for further info. This comprehensive BTEC Award runs for one day a week for two terms. It covers issues such as layout, site management, rollovers and how to get your site online. Design issues such as effective layout and use of typography and colour will be discussed. Photoshop topics include creating vector and bitmap image content, optimization, interactivity, exporting methods and integration. Later in the course you will develop your power-user skills, streamline your workflow to increase the efficiency of your web production process and use Cascading Style Sheets, Templates and Library Items. What does the course involve?
Term 1
This unit aims to provide learners with the basic skills required for website design. The unit promotes an understanding of basic html, styles and explores the elements required for good website design. The unit also looks at issues of content and overall site style.
Dreamweaver is the professional program for building web pages. Assemble images, text and learn how to build and publish a simple website containing links, buttons and rollovers.
Term 2
In term 2 we look at web graphics in more depth using Fireworks
This unit provides knowledge, skills and practical experience for learners in the production, manipulation and optimisation of web graphics. It allows learners to gain experience in the use of appropriate software. Learners will develop an understanding of the concepts and terminology related to optimisation, web graphics and associated file formats.
Use Fireworks to create exciting logos, navigation bars, animation and more.
What are the main areas of work?
Preparing graphics for the web and building web pages
What do the software packages on the course do? What are the differences between them?
The two main programs used on the course are Dreamweaver and Fireworks.
Dreamweaver is for building the web pages and Fireworks is for creating web graphics
Support and guidance is given on both a group and one to one basis at each class. There is a maximum of 15 students per class. There are group discussions following demonstrations and viewing of a range of websites.
What are the facilities and equipment like?
Apple Macs are currently installed in the study centres for use outside of class. B/W AND COLOUR printing on plain paper is available

As much as you are comfortable with in order to achieve your aims.
How is the course assessed?
You will build your own website on the subject of your choice. Technical skills covered on the course should be demonstrated on your site. Continuous assessment on a one to one basis
