  • Entry requirements Entry requirements The entry qualifications are more flexible than those required to enter a BSc honours degree programme. Standard Entry: Students being recruited on to the programme will normally be expected to have 80 UCAS points in a relevant subject area and GCSE in English and Maths at grade C or better. If the student does not have the relevant qualifications at GCSE then they will be required to attend an appropriate Summer University bridging course(s). Alternatively if the student has 80 Credits in a subject area not related to the discipline then they will be required to attend an appropriate Summer University course(s). Non-standard Entry: Mature applicants without formal or traditional entry qualifications may be admitted as a result of their life and/or work experience. Applicants over 21 will be regarded as mature students and admission will be based on an interview to determine the candidate’s academic potential and motivation for the programme. Mature applicants may be required to attend relevant Summer University bridging courses.

  • Course description General information

    The Foundation Degree in Network Computing addresses not only the momentous growth of networks and connectivity driven by the popularity of the Internet, but also the software systems that run on those networks. There is a need for IT professionals who can not only specify, design and implement network infrastructure but also specify, design and implement the software that operates on that infrastructure. It is anticipated that students will achieve this qualification after 2 years of either full-time or part-time study. Credits are awarded for activities carried out at the work place as well as at the College.

    Course content

    The programme will include the following courses:

        * Software Development
        * Communications and Web Technology
        * Operating and Database Systems
        * Work Related Case Study
        * Object Orientated Software Development
        * Software Engineering Practice
        * System and Network Administration
        * Work Based Learning Project

    Teaching and assessment

    Assessment methods are varied and include practical work, assignments, essays, presentations, short tests and examinations.

    Progression

    The Foundation Degree has been designed in conjunction with the University of Greenwich to allow graduates who meet the required academic standard direct entry onto the final year of the following BSc Honours degree programmes offered at the Medway School of Engineering: • BSc (Hons) Information Communication Technology • BSc (Hons) Computer Networking • BSc (Hons) Computer Systems and Software Engineering
