Course Digital Design and Fabrication

  • Course description Digital Design and Fabrication: Outdoor Design.
Summer and Winter Courses - Como

Through this course you have the opportunity to deepen and experience with the digital design processes and to comprehend the possible creative interaction with the most traditional design techniques. Specifically, you will have the opportunity to approach the design and production of   different functions and uses.

The projects will be developed using parametric design techniques and will be produced using both digital technologies and traditional practices with local or eco-sustainable materials (wood, bio-plastic, fabric).

The visits to places of interests  will be an active learning experience that serves both to complete the knowledge and skills acquired in class, as well as a cultural enrichment and inspirational source for your projects.

        Duration: 2 weeks
        Attendance: part-time
        Language: English

    Descripción:

Schedule and length: The course has a duration of 60 hours spread over 2 weeks and lessons are held from Monday to Thursday during the first week and from Monday to Saturday during the second week, on a part-time basis, both morning and afternoon.

Target: The course is open to high school graduates in artistic or scientific disciplines, as well as university students with at least one year in the architecture, interior or product design disciplines, wishing to approach the furniture design field and the most recent techniques of digital fabrication. The high school diploma, upper - intermediate level of English, a good knowledge of 3d Rhinoceros and a portfolio of (architecture, interior or product design) projects are necessary in order to be admitted.

Methodology and structure – This digital design ‘atelier’ consists in an immediate approach to design and practical work in the laboratory where, under the guidance of industry professionals, together with your classmates, you will experiment with traditional and digital tools and techniques for prototyping. You will deal with different briefs and scenarios and work in groups for the different projects. The theoretical notions will be addressed during the practical training that will take place in the fablab.

The course includes an introductory part related to the fundamental themes that will be addressed: project brief, study of different case histories, overview of the main trends in the sector, work plan, definition of the output and the correct methodology to be adopted. This will be followed by the practical training, through the use of the main software, digital and manufacturing tools which will lead to the creation of different prototypes.

    Study Plan.

Introduction to Computational Design and Parametric Design.
Through a series of theoretical lessons and through the analysis of different case studies you will become aware of the latest design methods applied in the fields of design, architecture and furniture. Trends, scenario and context analysis. Launch and study of the brief.

Digital Design Tools Applied to Design
    .
The different workshops proposed during the course allows you to acquire the fundamentals of 3D modeling with Rhino and Grasshopper, which are the main tools used for the development of the projects. Once the projects are developed, you and your classmates will be able to evaluate your own works and visualize them with virtual reality software, such as Enscape and Unreal Engine.

    Production.
This part of the course provides you with the necessary tools for the realization of the projects. You will get familiar with the additive manufacturing (3D printing) and subtractive manufacturing (CAM and laser cut) and acquire the techniques and practices of assembly and construction of temporary
    structures.
