Course descriptionWhat is the course about?
The interaction of style and subject matter in Italian Renaissance Art
Each week a particular subject or theme will be examined. You will learn how different artists have approached the subject, and an analysis made as to how the various approaches of artists such as Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Raphael and Titian differ.
What topics will we cover?
Each week a particular subject will be studied in paintings by artists who worked in different styles and different places and at different times during the Renaissance. Subject matter such as the Madonna and Child, the Crucifixion, Landscape, and Greek Myths could be taken as a theme.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Begin to understand the ways in which different stylistic approaches affect the way we respond to subject matter in relation to Renaissance art.
- Be able to recognise works by prominent Renaissance artists, and in particular Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Raphael and Titian.
- Know what were the common themes and subject matter used by Renaissance artists.
- Have an informed approach as to how and why the same subject matter was used but resulted in very different works.
What level is the course?
There are no entry requirements though an interest in Renaissance art would prove helpful. Hopefully the course will be stimulating enough to be rewarding for those with an established interest in the history of art, as well as being of interest to those new to the area.
How will I be taught?
Slide lectures with opportunities for discussion.
Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?
No.
What feedback will I get?
If you want to do written work, tell the tutor and he will set you essay questions and mark your answers. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?
Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
