  • Course description Course Description

This class is specifically for complete beginners to printmaking but would also be a good refresher course. You will be introduced to a range of printmaking techniques offering different approaches to creating an image - the painterly Monoprint, the linear Drypoint and Etching and the textural Collagraph. These techniques will enable you to explore various mark-making and drawing possibilities, experience using specialist tools and metals and create an image which will be printed on to paper in black and white or colour.

    What does the course involve?

You will be introduced to a range of printmaking techniques offering different approaches to creating an image - the painterly Monprint, the linear Drypoint and Etching and the textural Collagraph. These techniques will enable you to explore various mark-making and drawing possibilities, experience using specialist tools and metals and create an image which will be printed on to paper in black and white or colour. By the end of the course you will have a good grounding in how to use these processes and gain an overview of what printmaking can offer. Every few weeks a new technique is introduced by demonstration and looking at the work of other artists. Students are encouraged to explore the creative possibilities of these processes with individual support to guide them through set projects or realize self initiated work. During the second term, presentation of prints, editioning guidlines and mounting skills will be taught in preparation for finished work to be shown in the printmaking end of year show.

NB. It is important to come punctually to the class as much of the teaching will begin with a demonstration at 10.00am.

    Where will I study?

The printmaking studio is at the Hortensia Centre in the main Sloane building on the third floor, room S304. The studio is spacious and light with good fume extraction and specialist facilities including 2 Rochat printing presses, bed size: 26x48”.

How much should I study outside class?

In order to make the most of your experience on this course it is recommended that you prepare imagery and materials outside the class, however it is not a course requirement. You also need to keep a sketchbook documenting your research and development which can be done both in the class and at home.

    How is the course assessed?

In order to pass this course you will need to hand in your prints and supporting sketchbook work for assessment when asked. Upon successful completion of the work you will achieve a BTEC Award for two units in Visual Arts Printmaking Level 1. You will also have made a portfolio of prints which can be shown at interview for other courses in the future.
