  • Course description Duration and Levels:

    Intensive AS/A2 Level: One year - Day.

    AS & A2 Levels:
    Two years - AS in year 1, leading to A2 in year 2.

    AS Level: One year - Evening
     
    What does the AS Level include?

    The study and analysis of the social structure of modern Britain. Sociology gives you the opportunity to look at the characteristics of our society and to examine areas such as gender, ethnicity and social class in relation to issues such as educational underachievement, sexual stereotyping, institutional racism and the changing nature of family life.  The study methods used are lectures, discussions, independent research, essay writing and reading.

    The A/S comprises of two components: The Family and Education. There is also some coursework as part of the assessment of the A/S at the end of the first year.

    There are three main components to the A2. The Sociology of Religion and Crime & Deviance are both assessed through written exams. The third component is a substantial piece of coursework on a relevant topic of your choice.

    What do I need to get onto the AS Level?
    You should have a GCSE grade C in English Language.  Sociology is a very challenging ‘A’ level requiring detailed analysis, ability to think independently and produce regular detailed written material.

    What type of assessment is used for AS Level?
    Examinations/course work option at the end of the first year.

    What else can I study?
    Other AS Level subjects which are particularly suitable in combination with this include: History; English; Biology; Psychology; Government and Politics; Economics; Law.
