  • Entry requirements Entry requirements All our Hairdressing applicants attend a presentation and complete a diagnostic test in literacy & numeracy to ensure they are placed on the right level. Applicants also have a short interview with a hairdressing tutor to check suitability of course. In addition, all full time applicants require a minimum of 1 week's work experience in a salon which needs to be documented in a letter/reference from the salon prior to being offered a place. Entry requirements for our full time level 2 courses are: four GCSEs A-D/equivalent including English language or NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing and communications, L1/L2 diagnostic results.

  • Course description General information

    This is a two year course designed for study as a full-time programme aimed specifically at school leavers and those wishing to pursue salon employment in the Hairdressing industry.  In addition, it is also suitable for hairdressers wishing to update their qualifications & gain recognition for skills they already perform. This course can also be studied as part of the FMA framework.

    The achievement of Level 2 can lead to progression on to our Level 3 Hairdressing programme or employment as a junior stylist in a salon. Course content is highly practical and covers a broad range of basic skills. Students will also work toward key skills qualifications in communication, I.T & application of number.

    Course content


    Nine units must be completed for the full NVQ/SVQ. Each candidate must complete the six Mandatory Units, plus two optional Units.

    Mandatory Units:

        * G1 Ensure your own actions reduce risk to health and safety
        * G5 Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
        * G7 Advise and consult with clients
        * H6 Cut hair using basic techniques
        * H9 Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
        * H10 Style, dress and finish hair using basic techniques
        * H13 Change hair colour using basic techniques

    Plus two of the following optional units:

        * Perming Options - select 1 only H12 Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques OR H15 Perm, relax and neutralise hair OR H16 Perm, relax and neutralise African Caribbean hair
        * G4 Fulfil salon reception duties
        * G6 Promote additional products or services to clients
        * G8 Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work.

    Teaching and assessment

    All Hairdressing programmes are assessed through a combination the following : Observation of Practical work on Clients for all units, Project, Assignment and Case Studies. On-line tests and oral questioning, Work Place Assessment and building a 'Portfolio of Evidence' to be submitted for assessment at the completion of the programme, or an individual unit, as negotiated with your tutor.

    Lessons will be a combination of taught theory lessons and practical lessons. The practical lessons will take place in fully equipped salons where the students will have demonstrations and the opportunity to develop their hairdressing skills in the required units. When skills are at the required standard, students will be assessed on clients. The theory classes prepare the students for the tests and assignments they have to complete as part of the syllabus. Students will participate in group activities and individual study tasks.

    Your timetable will  incorporate a study day where you are required to work independently on completing study guides, research tasks and assignments in your own time. On full time courses, students are required to attend work experience. This will be arranged by your tutor during the spring or summer term. During year 2 you will be required to attend one day a week to prepare you for employment. You will also have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace if you have access to work on clients.

    Progression

    Successful completion of all units will enable you to seek employment in a hairdressing salon as a junior stylist. You will also be able to progress to NVQ Level 3.
